It
was built so as to contain St. Peter’s chains.
Here there is the Famous Moses of Michelangelo.
Dominating
the tomb of Pope Julius II is Michelangelo's
imposing Moses. The church is more
revered by Catholics for containing the chains
believed to have shackled Saint Peter both in
Jerusalem and in the Mamertine Prison.
There
are several relics of Peter in Rome - footprints
in Santa Francesca Romana, a head print,
where he butted the ground as he was thrown into
the Mamertine Prison, and his head itself
in San Giovanni in Laterano - but the chains
are the most venerated of all, displayed here in
a glass case over the altar.
They
are paraded around the city every 1st August.
