The main
reason to visit is to see the third·century titulus
underneath this ninth-century church, It's a
spooky and rarely visited place, littered with bits
of sculpture, decaying mosaics and
frescoes.
The
church above the titulus is chiefly remarkable
for two frescoes: one showing San Giovanni in
Laterano as it was before Borromini's changes (far
left, by Dughet), and the portraying
other
original Saint Peter's basilica (far right, by
Gagliardl).
